A base layer of porous volcanic stone with organic nutrients, laid under aqua soil where plants will root. It keeps water moving through the substrate and feeds roots over a long time. Not for use on its own: cover it fully with aqua soil. ADA sizes it by the depth of water in the tank: S for 40 cm or less, M for 40–60 cm.
